Uterine Contraction stress Test by Intermittent Nipple Stimulation

Abstract
Although the nonstress test generally replaced the contraction stress test as the primary test for assessment of fetal well being, the contraction stress test continues to be useful.
Disagreeable factors of the contraction stress test have included the time required to complete the test and the necessity for intravenous oxytocin dripping.
The author studied the contraction stress test using contractions produced by intermittent nipple stimulation. 61 tests on 38 high-risk pregnancies were performed during 8-month period. One breast was stimulated for two minutes and then 5 minutes rest was followed. This cycle was repeated as necessary.
The author was successful in achieving an adequate contraction frequency with every attempt, and hyperstimulation was not more frequent than previously reported with contraction stress test by oxytocin. Average time requirement was 50 minutes.
